Have you ever wondered what a typical month might look like at the House of Healing? Well, wonder no more! Missionary Teri gives us an inside look:
We experienced winds at 70mph during January, with gusts up to 120. There were broken high power lines in front of HoH (House of Healing) and in front of the Catholic Church. Everything electric went to wherever bulbs, refrigerators, and coffee pots go when they die. Surge protectors, however, did their jobs, giving their lives to save the modem and other things plugged into them.
Two Discovery people were here and helped get things back to kind of normal. One young man from Washington even got on the roof to check out the damage. Julie, who has been here since last January, was amazed at the power of the wind.
Amidst this we had 3 groups. One came from Michigan to work on a water filter project and the medical clinic, and to work with one of our special needs children. Another group came from Texas to serve a young single mom with a young son who needed a home and stove. The land on which they built required some ingenious gutters to prevent erosion. Coincidentally or not, on the night of the dedication it poured rain (very unusual for January). She called the next morning and with great joy told us that the gutters worked and that no erosion took place at all!
The third team included a pastor and associates from North Carolina who work with Tina’s ministry. They held a three day conference for leaders and their wives. So our dining room (so-called because no one ever wants to eat there when they can eat upstairs in the upper room) became a conference center.
There are other things going on at HoH. Julie has been taking “flete” (the back of a pickup) to help seven year old Alex, our special needs boy who is Santiago’s son. (Santiago is our main construction worker on the projects.) Alex goes to school but needs constant supervision, so Julie is time sharing with family members. We have seen a miracle with Alex. A simple change in medicine has freed him from a groggy, non interactive state to a very curious and active 7 year old!
Parker, our other student, has learned to put in cement floors, and helped with 2 of them this past week as we got donations from the group who built the home.
And to top everything off we had lots of soccer. The women’s team got involved along with lots of kids, resulting in lots of laughs and even a couple goals! The gringos even won a game!!!
So there you have it, the latest month at the House of Healing, changing the world one life at a time.
